Ugly Betty, a mind-blowing American comedy-drama television series produced and created by Silvio Horta, was premiered on The American Broadcasting Company on September 28, 2006. The show throws light on Betty Suarez who is far from the madding crowd, far from fashion but yet caught in a job at unglamorous and good-natured girl, and the ultra-chic New York City fashion magazine Mode. Ugly Betty has been inspired from the Colombian telenovela Betty la fea, written by Fernando Gaitán. The show is a combined effort and has been produced by Silent H, Ventanarosa and Reveille respectively partnered with ABC Studios, and is primary filmed in Los Angeles, California, but together with the pilot episode and the third and fourth season the series is filmed in New York. The executive producers are Salma Hayek, Silvio Horta, Ben Silverman, Jose Tamez and Joel Fields.
Ugly Betty: Show that rocked
Betty Suarez has one dream that she had woven throughout her life: to make it big in the printing and publishing business. However her dreams were being overshadowed by the fact that she did not fit into the traditional concept of glamour and glitz. Though she was determined and hard working, she was pushed behind because of her looks. She was a thing to laugh at and her colleagues took advantage of this. So she was nowhere. But despite it all, she is determined to do whatever it takes to fulfil that ultimate dream.
Ugly Betty casts America Ferrera in the title role. The show is based on the most popular Colombian telenovela which has already been successfully translated in Mexico, India, Russia, Greece and Germany – all too stellar ratings.
Ugly Betty: Success review
Ugly Betty now has been prepared for another serving by ABC for a fourth season and will air on Friday nights at 9:00pm Eastern/8:00pm, Central starting October 9, 2009. TV Guide Network now has acquired the exclusive cable right to the show and will air the fourth season episodes 14 days after its ABC run with an option to strip the show daily, with plans to air it weekly starting in the fall of 2010.
America Ferrera has wooed the audience as Betty. She best suits the role as she brings out Betty’s naïveté and humiliations to the hilt, such as when Betty must don a racy outfit for a fashion shoot, but she protects viewers from cringing to the point of pain. Betty becomes a laughing stock emotionally down and stuffed into leather and thigh-high boots. Here lies the action. She makes us feel for her pangs and we melt down as we get into the intense drama and climax of the show.
Ugly Betty has a satirical take much like Wilhelmina would also represent the TV industry, which routinely sneers at “ugly” women like Betty. However, the show has an flavour of the underdog comedy and a campy soap-opera tinge like “Desperate Housewives”. The tales is ironical and temperature rises as the show goes on! Whatever the case is, we all know that at the end of the series, it is Betty who comes out triumphant despite her old-fashioned red poncho!!!
