Law & Order: Criminal Intent is a long running popular American crime drama series which has just completed its eighth season successfully. This series was originally created by Rene Barker and Dick Wolf way back in 2001. The show was first aired on NBC networks on September 30, 2001. The average audience for the show stood at approximately 15.5 million viewers beating other popular shows like ‘The Alias’ and ‘The Sopranos’ on a consistent basis. Often it was the highest rated show of the night. Though the first six seasons were telecasted on NBC networks, the last two has been on USA network. Due to the stupendous success of season 7 and season 8, USA network have already bought the broadcasting rights of the 9th season which has become one of the most eagerly awaited television shows of recent times.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent plot
The plot of Law & Order: Criminal Intent revolves around Detective Robert Goren, the main protagonist of the story. He is an integral part of the ‘Major Case Squad’ of the New York Police Department which handles the most complicated of crime cases that occur in the backdrops of New York City. The Major Case Squad is usually called upon to investigate cases of highly influential people like politicians, government officials and employees, financial executives and business tycoons who have the capacity to influence the course of justice through the power of money. This show is unique and different from other shows of the same genre in that it gives an insight into the motives and the circumstances which led to occurrence of the crime. A lot of cut scenes are inserted in between which helps the viewer understand the psyche of the criminal. This in fact is one of the reasons behind the show’s tremendous success.

The main protagonist of Law & Order: Criminal Intent is Detective Robert Goren played by Vincent D’Onofrio. He is an extraordinary criminal investigator with an in depth knowledge in wide array of subjects such as physics, chemistry, literature, history and multiple foreign languages which helps him greatly during investigations. But what makes him unique is his brilliant criminal instinct which has proved to be case breaker on many occasions. Robert served in the army and the narcotics department of NYPD before he took over the reins of Major Case Squad.
Other characters worth mentioning is Detective Alexandra Eames, who complements Goren well as a partner despite differences in their characters and Detective Bishop who serves as a replacement for Detective Eames when she takes a leave to be a surrogate mother for her sister. She struggles to keep up with Goren and his ways. From season five onwards, the Law & Order: Criminal Intent viewers got to see one additional team headed by Detective Mike Loggan played by Chris North.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent has a record of 5 wins and 16 nominations during its tenure spanning over 8 years. Moreover it has set the record for highest number of viewers on numerous occasions. If the cast and crew carry on with such good work another great season is in store for this epic show.
